still trying to get a good grade in art
Last month two friends and I visited the New Orleans Museum of Art. Of course we saw art from everywhere and everywhen, and of course I, an art school graduate, should be able to write all about it. Eloquently.
But that's the problem. I'm not sure how to talk about the works I connected with. How not to sound cliché. How not to sound like I'm writing a college essay, but still do justice to the history surrounding each piece. How to sound like me.
For example, I really liked this Saturn-shaped punch bowl but what can I say about it other than that it reminds me of space and specifically the Space Age, even though it was made a few decades before human space travel?
I graduated nine years ago, but apparently I'm still trying to get a good grade in art.
The other day I met up with another friend to make zines. To help myself loosen up, I made a one-off zine of drawings with my non-dominant hand (thanks for the idea, online zine idea generator!). Even though I knew my right-handed doodles of sea creatures would be wobbly, it was hard not to scrap the zine and start over. Maybe it helped me get unstuck, though? If nothing else, the wonky walrus and wonkier-than-usual ocean sunfish were delightful.
